Walking the Tight Rope While Running a Freelance Writing Business…
As a mom and a freelance writer, you may find it hard to balance writing, housework, and time for your family. It’s not an easy task and you may feel like you’re being pulled in a hundred directions at once. Walking the balance tight rope while running a freelance writing business can be nerve-wracking, but it also has its rewards.
As women and moms, we’re often under the mistaken assumption that we can be Wonder Woman. We think we can do it all and still have time for ourselves. Unfortunately, that isn’t often the case. The following are four ideas you can use to make walking the balance tight rope a little less hectic:
Set realistic goals
No matter how you might like it to be otherwise, there are only 24 hours in a day. Setting goals over which you’ll have the most control makes them more realistic. For instance, a realistic goal would be to write during your toddler’s daily nap. An unrealistic goal might be writing for eight uninterrupted hours each day. If you have children, you know that’s not going to happen. Small, measurable goals may be more attainable than large, sweeping goals in every area of your life.
Define priorities
As a freelance writer who is also a mom, you’ll need to have priorities in more than one area. There’s your business, home, children, partner, friends, and yourself. You may even have others. It’s important to define your priorities to be able to manage your time. Deciding what is most important to you will help you define your priorities.
Schedule time
After you’ve determined what is most important to you, you can start to schedule your time more effectively. Grab a large calendar and start filling in family obligations first. Next you can schedule writing time. Add in a date night with your partner, and don’t forget to schedule time for housework.
Learn to let go
It’s hard to let go when you’re trying to be Wonder Woman. There are some things, however, you can’t control. If you’re spread too thin, why not outsource something that’s bogging you down? Delegate some of the housework, let go of perfection, and you’ll have more time to spend with your family.
Balancing your life as a wife, mother, and freelance writer can be difficult. Walking the balance tight rope while running a freelance writing business requires you to set realistic goals, define priorities, schedule time, and let go. Other freelance writers have been successful balancing it all, and you will, too!
