Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 -Normally people think of freelance writing in terms of someone sitting in front of a computer typing away. And in most cases that’s probably an accurate description. However, people who can’t type, for one reason or another, or simply prefer to speak rather than type can still be a freelance writer with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 by Nuance.

This is speech recognition software which allows the user to dictate their thoughts which are then transcribed into an open word processing document. This software is three times faster than typing and is said to be 99% accurate. The program is expensive, generally around $200 or more, but many professionals consider it to be the best program available for speech recognition.

I’ve actually used this product myself and found the learning curve to be much shorter than I expected and am amazed at how it helps me flesh out thoughts, outline books and reports quickly and even create the rough draft for projects in minutes rather than hours. It’s a great tool for busting through writer’s block too.Check it out!

OpenOffice.org 3 -Many freelance writers use Microsoft products, but if you’re starting out you probably don’t have that type of money to spend. OpenOffice.org 3 is considered to be the best open-source office suite for word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics. It is free to download and is compatible with most other word processing programs.

OpenOffice.org 3 began as a single program over twenty years ago and has developed into a product with unmatched consistency and quality. It is easy to learn and supports a multitude of languages. Many freelance writers just starting out find OpenOffice.org 3 to be exactly what they need and never switch.

I absolutely love Open Office and have installed it on all of our household computers. My children use it for their homework assignments.Best of all, it’s just as functional as the Microsoft products and it’s free.
