I often hear people ask, “what is your day like?” “How do you work?” “What types of projects do you get?” “How much do you make in the average day/week/month?” and so on. In order to answer those questions and perhaps demonstrate a typical day in the life, I thought I’d journal the next ten days of business.
Friday May 8th, 2009
Between the hours of 6:30am and 1:00
- Completed 36 page report (Spent 3.5 hours polishing and finishing the report. Took 2 full days to write it) ~ $700
- Outlined 3 1200+ word articles to be delivered on Monday ~ $150
- Invoiced for small report project deposit ~ $80
- Received check for report delivered last week (YAY!)
- Blogged for FWB
- Spent a few minutes social networking on Twitter and Facebook
- Checked in with writing/editing team to follow up on a few pending projects
Between 1:00 and the end of the day…
Then it’s off to take the cat to the vet, take daughter and friend to the mall, cook dinner and take other daughter to her choir concert. Also need to go to bank, bookstore and mailbox. Busy afternoon but a profitable and productive morning.
Happy writing!

Those big pay days are always nice. I just wish they could be every day
. It’s also nice that you include social networking in your work day. Sometimes we forget what an important part of the job that really can be for freelance work opportunities!
Yes, you have to love the surprise checks in your mailbox!
As for social marketing, I’m still on the fence about it as an income generator however I have made some valuable connections through social networking and it’s a nice low pressure way to stay in touch with clients.
Surprise checks are EXTREMELY nice – particularly when you forget that they were coming.
I am struggling with finding consistent jobs in the freelance writing business. It has been especially rough for the first few months of 2009.
