Balance Life when Working from Home

Home businesses are growing by large numbers each year. Though usually easier to start, a home business is just like any other business when it comes to managing daily tasks and promoting the business. Even though you are at home, finding a balance between business and home responsibilities can be difficult.

Having a business that is run from home provides a two-fold benefit. For parents with small children, the savings on daycare alone is a great plus. Working from home means not having to punch a clock or start the car on cold mornings. There is job satisfaction because a home business usually begins from an idea of something we love to do.

That job satisfaction soon goes away when home business owners realize that finding a proper balance is not as easy as it sounds. There are a couple of factors that play an integral part:

· Small children

· Personal work ethic

· Family support

Children

When we put them in daycare, we feel guilty because we can’t spend a lot of time with them. When they are home, we see more than enough of them. Without a schedule for our little ones, we’ll spend more time chasing them around then we will work on our business.

For many people, working a home business is a necessity. They have given up their day job to spend more time with the family and still contribute to the family finances. The business won’t make a profit if no time is spent on it.

Work Ethic

At a nine-to-five job, we work a set schedule. Our time is monitored by the boss. At home, we are the boss. Being in such comfortable surroundings where we get to work in our pajamas is a privilege and a responsibility.

Procrastination is a constant problem. Even the most dedicated business owner can fall prey to a period of procrastination. It takes a well thought out schedule and some willpower to keep from getting behind.

Family support

Lack of family support can derail the balance between business and family life. Because the business is run from home, this doesn’t mean that it is easy or not to be taken seriously. Every member of the family has to participate in keeping to a schedule that includes time for business dealings and family activities.

It is easy to supersede the schedule and spend more time on business or go over on your family time. Resist the urge by tweaking your schedule if it seems that the balance is slipping in favor of one or the other. Don’t forget to schedule in personal time while everyone else is getting a piece of your time.

Balance is hard to achieve anyway, but especially hard when work and play occur in the same place. Before beginning a home business, factor in the time element to create a workable schedule for you and your family.

Procrastination is a very ugly word. :D

I’ve written several articles on the subject and am mastering the skill write now by posting on YOUR blog instead of writing on my own ;) ).

I do have to agree that if your family isn’t behind you then you definitely will have an even steeper climb to success.
